Feeding your cat

Complete diets, fresh water, and foods that are dangerous to cats.

Choose a complete food

Cats need nutrients, including taurine, that come from animal protein. Choose a food labelled as complete for your cat's life stage: kitten, adult or senior. Your vet can advise how much to feed, because needs vary with age, size and activity.

Water matters

Many cats don't drink much. Wet food adds moisture, and some cats drink more from wide bowls or water fountains placed away from their food.

Never feed these

Most adult cats don't digest lactose well, so cow's milk often causes an upset stomach.

  • Onions, garlic, leeks and chives, in any form
  • Chocolate, caffeine and alcohol
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Dog food as a regular diet: it lacks nutrients cats need
  • Cooked bones, which can splinter
