Litter trays cats actually use

How many trays, where to put them, and how often to clean.

How many trays

A common rule of thumb is one tray per cat plus one extra, spread around the home rather than lined up in one spot.

Where to put them

  • Somewhere quiet, away from washing machines and busy doorways
  • Away from food and water bowls
  • Easy to reach for older cats with stiff joints

Keeping them clean

Scoop at least once a day and fully change the litter regularly. Many cats prefer unscented, fine-grained litter. If you change litter type, mix the new one in gradually.

If a cat stops using the tray, it can be a sign of stress or a medical problem such as a urinary infection. Book a vet check before assuming it's behaviour.
