Reading cat body language

What tails, ears and slow blinks are telling you.

Tail

  • Upright with a slight hook at the tip: friendly and confident
  • Puffed up: frightened
  • Thrashing or thumping: annoyed, so give them space

Ears and eyes

  • Ears forward: relaxed or interested
  • Ears flat or turned sideways: worried or irritated
  • Slow blinks: relaxed and trusting

Belly up isn't always an invitation

A cat showing their belly is relaxed around you, but many cats don't like belly rubs. Stroke cheeks and the base of the ears instead, and stop when they move away.
