Vet care basics
Vaccinations, neutering, microchips, and parasite prevention.
Register with a vet early
Find a vet before your cat comes home, and book a check-up within the first couple of weeks. Bring any records the rescuer gives you.
Routine care
- Vaccinations, with boosters as your vet recommends
- Neutering, which prevents unplanned litters and some health problems
- Flea and worm treatment on a regular schedule
- A microchip, with your current contact details registered
Signs to act on quickly
If you're unsure, call your vet. They would rather hear from you early.
- Not eating for more than a day
- Straining in the litter tray, especially male cats
- Breathing with an open mouth, or breathing fast at rest
- Sudden hiding, wobbliness or collapse
